Ideals of Democracy

Self Government
Self government is defined as the government of a country by its own people, especially after having been a colony. The U.S. became a self governing upon declaring Independence from Britain and becoming its own nation. This allowed a whole new approach and many things to be changed within the nation. The government would become about the people and have things passed based on majority rather than a tyrannical role.

North Korea on the other hand has and still does assume the tyrannical role. The country did break off however by definition it does not apply. First of all, the people did not do this but rather the country was created after World War II in 1945 as Japan freed Korea. Half the nation split into its own country of North Korea and the other half was South Korea. It became a communist country, something South Korea despised and after a war about the topic, the two decided to agree on the split and be two divided nations. The country of North Korea today is ran by dictator Kim Jong Un and suffers to this day with governing and providing the basic rights of a human to their own people.

Participation
Participation, in terms of government, refers to the act of taking part in deciding the rules of daily life and actively being aware and proactive of what is going on. In the United States, people are able to voice their opinions, vote on leaders and laws, and run for government positions. Everything is televised and out there for someone to have an educated opinion and make decisions based on actual facts. A perfect example of this is The State of the Union address given by the president that informs the nation of the accomplishments, tasks, and future plans the president has issued. Simple knowledge like this what allows people to make educated decisions when it comes to backing or opposing political parties, candidates running for office, or even the decisions made by the government.

Participation with the government in North Korea is quite the opposite of that here in the United States. The people are constantly fed lies and unable to communicate with the outside world. The extreme censorship Kim Jong Un applies to the people there allows them to be mislead and helpless a the dictatorship gives no power to the people. The reasoning for censorship is they reject other governing methods so much they do not want the people to see that others have a say in what goes on and therefore not participate. All in all, Kim Jong Un makes participation impossible for the people of North Korea.

Liberty
Liberty refers to the idea that citizens are free from government control. The people have natural rights and access to common knowledge that should be considered free. In the United States today limited restrictions are put on citizens to limit their liberty. People have to right to speak their minds and act as they choose as long as it doesn’t cause harm to others. a citizen may speak up against the government   For example, information, whether it’s over the Internet or on TV, is not suppressed by the government. Although it may be censored, people are not fed false information.

Within North Korea, liberty is essentially nonexistent. Everything from daily activities to the media is entirely controlled by the totalitarian government. Lies about the dictator range from the discovery of a unicorn lair 220 yards from a Pyongyang temple in 2012, to Kim Jong Il accomplishing a world record golf score the first time playing. Citizens are not allowed access to the Internet, and television and news are completely run by the government. Daily life is controlled down to the distribution of food throughout the country. The application of liberty into North Korea would free up peoples ability to be a functioning member of society. Citizens would have access to information that would allow them to make educated decisions that could better their own lives and lead the country to prosper.
